The 9th Nagaland Veteran Inter-District Football Championship 2019 kicked off on Sunday. For the first time, old-timers from state are getting to play at the newly-installed astro-turf pitch at IG Stadium in the Nagaland capital.

Marking the opening day, an exhibition match was played between Women IG Sports Academy and Soccer Damsel’s Kohima. The championship was organised by the Nagaland Veteran Football Association (NVFA) and hosted by the Kohima District Veteran Football Association.

DGP TJ Longkumer, who was the special guest, lauded the veteran footballers for their dedication to the sport and for maintaining a good fitness level. Longkumer further encouraged the players by saying: “As we all know, age is merely a number and I am sure that we will witness some very skilful footballers in days to come”.

K Kire, former DGP and president of NVFA, expressed that the tournament was held to keep the veterans fit and hoped that the players will continue to play in the spirit of a true sportsmanship.

Meanwhile, six out of the 11 districts -- Mokokchung, Wokha, Dimapur, Kohima, Mon and Phek -- will be competing in the championship.
