Kohima: At an oath taking ceremony in Raj Bhavan, Kohima, Mayang Lima was sworn in as the state's first upa lokayukta by Nagaland governor PB Acharya on Friday.

Lima is a retired principal district and sessions judge. He will hold the office for a term of five years or till he attains the age of 70, whichever comes sooner.

Earlier this year in February, former chief justice of Meghalaya High Court Uma Nath Singh was administered oath of office as the first lokayukta of the state.

In 2018, another Northeastern state got its first lokayukta. Retired Gauhati High Court judge Pranoy Kumar Musahary was sworn in as the first chairperson of lokayukta in Meghalaya.

A lokayukta is an anti-corruption ombudsman organisation in Indian states. Once appointed, they cannot be dismissed or transferred, unless an impeachment motion is passed against them in the respective state legislative assembly.

They have the power to probe allegations of corruption against public functionaries such as the chief minister, deputy chief minister, ministers, speaker and deputy speaker of Assembly, MLAs, besides government officials.
