Kohima: The Kohima hub of Global Shapers Community organised its first outdoor fundraiser event, with the ultimate aim to give underprivileged children an opportunity to learn, in Kohima on Thursday.

With 370 ‘hubs’ around the world, the World Economic Forum (WEF)-funded community is on a mission to improve the educational status, and further address the social needs of society. At present, 19 young individuals from diverse economic, social and cultural backgrounds form the team at Kohima hub.

Speaking with EastMojo, Kekhrie Mezhür Sekhose, curator of Global Shapers Community, Kohima hub, said, "As a community hub, we have different interests. At our hub in particular, our primary interest is around education, environment and mental health.”

"Today, we are having a fundraiser for ‘Each One, Teach One’. This is an initiative by a gentleman called Kethosilie Sorhie who started a tuition centre for underprivileged kids in and around Kohima," Sekhose added.

Sorhie is an entrepreneur, theologian and social worker. The member of Childline Kohima started ‘Each One, Teach One’ in 2017. Through the initiative, Sorhie used to provide free tuition to 40 students with the help of two volunteer tutors, but later had to stop it due to financial constraints.

Sekhose added, "As a community, we approached him [Sorhie] and wanted to bring in a new lease of life to this project. So, today we're trying to raise financial resources and also to create awareness among our younger generation about this free teaching institution.”

The Kohima hub has taken the initiative to not only teach students through this project but to also train the students to think beyond the academic realm by involving the art of fine arts tutorials (such as music, art, etc) as well.

Sekhose further said, "We don't want to make this tuition centre just about academic curriculum. We want to make it a learning centre. We just don't want to teach kids but we want to inspire them as well.”

Stating their vision, he said, "We don't know how much the kids are going to learn. But we hope to inspire them to think beyond their academic performance and also to look beyond studies. I think this will broaden their horizon and make them citizens who will be socially conscious."

The fundraiser was a one-day initiative where several sub-events like fitness competitions, dance battles and musical performances took place.
