We get new music from veteran rock stars (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Liam Gallagher), and some fun tracks from artists like Nicki Minaj, Saweetie, BENEE. All in all, this has been an exciting week for popular music.

1. Nicki Minaj – Do We Have a Problem? (feat. Lil Baby)

The queen of rap returns with killer bars, rhyme schemes and flow to prove once again that she is unbeatable in the rap game. Lil Baby makes a bold feature too as Minaj pushes him to up his pen game. The hook is strong and the track is full of attitude. Minaj and Baby have strong chemistry.

2. Tai’Aysha – One Night Ting (feat. Saweetie)

Hot new singer Tai Aysha makes an extremely infectious, sweet and melodious dance song about “cutting loose, letting go, and throwing yourself into the night.” The Boston-born, Miami-based singer explained this to the press but also clarified that she’s “never actually had a one-night stand”.

3. Krewella – I’m Just A Monster Underneath, My Darling

The electronic dance duo from Illinois have been in the public consciousness for quite some time, crashing onto the scene with “Alive” and “Enjoy The Ride“. They prove once again to be the beacon of representation for alternative, angst-ridden and isolated youth with their chaotic and manic song.

4. BENEE – Beach Boy

BENEE once again gives us a sweet, vibe-y and relaxing song about flirtation, pining and summer love. “Beach Boy” has that relaxing, dreamy sound which bedroom pop artists aim for with the sweetness of a candy melting in your mouth.

5. Red Hot Chili Peppers – Black Summer

The rock legends have made a thrillingly rapturous, entertaining and dramatic song. “Black Summer” has stellar vocals from Anthony Kiedis and impressive lyrical prowess as the singer alludes to China, censorship, headless horses and the dark side of the moon. It’s a red hot song that has everybody talking.

6. Liam Gallagher – Everything’s Electric

The former lead singer of the now defunct Oasis has swagger and charisma in what sounds like a golden oldie that rock heads would love to kick back to. Gallagher sounds quite young here; his voice is strong as they come although sometimes he sounds like he’s struggling to hit the high notes. It’s still a magnetic performance, though.

7. Lady Leshurr – Likkle Darling

The queen of UK rap is back after taking a break to deal with personal issues and mental health to make a killer new track. “Likkle Darling” is pure fun from beginning to end with Leshurr mixing rap with dancehall beats. Her bars and attitude are strong as ever and it’s a pleasure to see the artist so self-assured without losing any traits that made her music so loved.

8. Tay Money – Hello (feat. Saucy Santana)

There hasn’t been a song which made such fun use of phone sounds since Ashnikko and Baby Tate’s “STUPID“. Tay Money and Saucy Santano dial it all the way up in this tasty bop as Tay tells her haters to pack it up. The best part is that the two artists actually sound like they’re having fun here, and we listeners have fun with them.

9. Illuminati hotties – Sandwich Sharer

The punk band led by Sarah Tudzin don’t want to rest too much. Having dropped a full-length album last autumn, they’re back with a truly satisfying punk-soft-rock concoction that goes from emotional highs to lows rapidly like a roller coaster and leaves us with rushing adrenaline.

10. Hope Tala – Party Sickness

Is there anything Hope Tala can not do? She continues her brilliant streak with “Party Sickness” which is musically sentimental and lyrically intimate, and altogether tender and lovely.

11. Arlo Parks – Softly

The 21-year-old from London is fast gaining attention from across the world since the release of her debut full-length ‘Collapsed In Sunbeams‘ last year. “Softly” is in the same vein with its theme of heartfelt longing, vulnerable lyrics, and a sense of innocence, youth and hope melded in a beautifully painted love song.

12. Luna Li – Silver Into Rain (feat. beabadoobee)

Luna Li is an enthralling young artist from Toronto with a great pop-rock tune featuring UK’s Beabadoobee. It’s a brilliant mash of guitar, drums, mood and emotions that will break your heart and patch it together all at once.

13. Halle Abadi – FLIRT

Co-written by singer Natania Lalwani, “FLIRT” is what’s written on the can. It’s a fun, flirty and preppy little pop song that sounds like sun-kissed skin, beaches, smoothies and cocktails.

14. Kyle Dion – HAZY (feat. Tkay Maidza)

“HAZY” is an easy going tune that you can chill to with nothing particular that truly makes the song stand out. The R&B/pop tune still makes for a fun listen though.

15. Ravyn Lenae – Skin Tight (feat. Steve Lacy)

The 23-year old singer makes a delicate, sexy and intoxicated little love song with some interesting production choices. “Skin Tight” is slow, subdued and soft with a mood that will leave you light-headed. We don’t hear much of Steve Lacy’s singing here but that’s probably for the best.

16. Modern Studies – Mothlight

The Glasgow band do what they’re best at: delivering dreamy pop perfection with lyrical allusions to dreams, memories, happiness and the lack thereof.

17. PJ Harvey – The Community of Hope (Demo)

PJ Harvey drops the second single from her upcoming ‘The Hope Six Demolition Project (Demos)’ album. The rocker reminds us of her shining and rare talent once again by demonstrating how enjoyable and iconic even her demo versions can be.
