Transgender is the legally accepted third gender as per the Supreme Court ruling in 2014, However, the Indian society is far from accepting and including the third gender.Music sensation from Assam, Abhishruti Bezbaruah just released her new song Ore Rati which brought into focus this very point. The song features an empowered Assamese Trans woman Janvi Borkakoti who is currently based in New Delhi working for a European IT consulting firm. Legendary actor of Assam and National awardee Malaya Goswami and Bijit Kumar Das also features in the storyline. The music video also features Abhishruti & Tanets Twins Dimpi – Simpi.
Talking with VibesMojo, Abhishruti Bezbaruah said, “As an artist, when I spoke with transgender folk in Assam trying to understand and gain a perspective, I understood that they long for family acceptance and they want to be able to live in our society without being judged. Gender dysphoria is first noticed at home and parents are the first to witnesses. While some parents and families are accepting, for others who aren’t, the struggle very hard.”
Abhishruti Bezbaruah added that there is also a pre-conceived notion that gender identity is a mental illness and any psychiatrist can treat this which according to the singer is quite “traumatic.”
Supported by the Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Govt. of Assam & YPO northeast chapter, the singer hopes her message for the inclusion & embracement of trans people reaches a wide audience not only in Assam but all over India.
“Children undergoing gender dysphoria also end up getting bullied and laughed at in school. We need sensitisation at various levels in our society. Societal prejudices cause a lot of disturbance,” adding “I personally believe that we are all humans and one must be respected, one must ben given that freedom to express oneself the way one wishes to, regardless of their gender identity.”

Her music has been featured in Harper’s Bazaar, Outlook India, Times of India (Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai), The Telegraph and many other newspapers & digital platforms. She has been recently conferred with a “Sangeet Siromoni Award” and Special Jury Award for her outstanding presentation of her track Tuhu Deeno which is a 116-year-old classical devotional song penned by Late Radhanath Phukan which has elements of the traditional Ojapali form of music. She was also nominated for the 62nd MPSE Golden Reel Award 2015 for Best Sound Effects Editor for the Film ROAR – Tigers of the Sunderbans which was held in Los Angeles, U.S.A.
