The COVID-19 pandemic and its subsequent lockdown surely have effected everyone in its own unique way. Some opened themselves up to newer experience likes of cooking, skill enhancements, learning a new language, or even learning how to play the guitar.
For Mar Jamir, best known for his role as the lead singer of the alt-rock band Polar Lights it meant trying out and even coming up with his debut solo song entitled Dear Me which was released on June 7 and has already garnered over 5K views on YouTube.
“Everyone’s living through very rough circumstances right now, myself included. So, ‘Dear me’ is me venting out my frustrations the only way I know how to and that is through music,” said Mar Jamir when asked about 2020 being the driving force behind his solo composition.
It took the artist three days to write the song which in its entirety is his own composition. However, “I had my friend Nash play the guitar and Meyasunep play the bass for me on the song. Nash actually mixed and mastered the song,” said Jamir.
With lyrics of the likes of, “Congratulations/ And I hope this finds you in good health/ I hope you’re keeping well/ Do you still have that old piano/ Are you still playing your music?/ You still dating that girl/ Do you still believe in magic/ Did you go travel the world/ I am only playing/ Yeah/ I guess I’m doing alright/ 2020’s been so damn crazy/ I am just glad I’m alive,” Jamir talks about the existing chaos of the year 2020 where everyone is trying their best to just survive.
The mellow tune, with the video of Mar Jamir singing the song without any additional visuals, draws the attention of the viewers to the lyrics; which is synchronous to the happenings of the present year.
Jamir has been writing songs since age 11 and has been professionally in the field of music since the last seven years in the band “Polar Lights.”
The band was supposed to go on a city tour back on March 4 but was canceled due to the present scenario. Talking about how the post-COVID scene would affect the music scene he said, “as far as music is concern, it’s going to be a while before we see bands/artist putting on live concerts let alone going on tour, even post COVID-19.And to band like Polar Lights we make our money primarily through live gigs. So to be completely honest, I really don’t have an answer for you on this. We’ll cross that bridge when we get there”
“So what’s next for you Jamir?”
“I’m currently writing non-stop for the new Polar Lights full-length album, but in regards to my solo music I definitely want to keep putting out new music,” said the artist adding that he plans to hopefully have an EP ready for release by the end of the year.
