International actor, director, writer, poet, lyricist & musician, Shenpenn Khymsar will be finally make his mainstream debut as an actor, appearing next to Kirti Kulhari, Nivedita Bhattacharya, Kay Kay Menon, Medha Shankar, Apurv Dogra and Ajay Jayanthi in the Disney+Hotstar exclusive ‘Shaadisthan‘.
EastMojo reached out to the Broken Wings director for a few words on his role in the movie. “My role is a supporting character called Jigme and I am one of the band members, the guitarist of the band.” He says his character is the newest band member and is more about vlogging and travelling the world. He told us, “this role might have been written for someone else, but somehow it landed to me and the director and producers liked it,” he said.
Shenpenn plays the role of a musician and is a musician in real life too. On being asked about it, he said, “I really played the guitar in the movie. I was not like other Hindi movies, I played everything.”
Talking about his experience on set, he says everyone worked as a team. “We all did everything. For example, I was helping the direction team or the camera team when I was not shooting,” he added.
On being asked what will draw viewers towards this movie, the actor said, “I think it’s a little different than most movies. And it has a freshness to it. There’s a lot of real talent and real artists. And the story is also quite interesting, it is all about women empowering themselves. And I think it’s kind of like the interjection of the old India and new India. It is also a slap in the face of the typical Indian patriarchal system. And I think what’s different is the fusion of music and the cast is fresh, and also it is a road film. There are not many road films in India.”
Talking about his future projects, Shenpenn said that he is already working on his next film as a director which will be a gangster film. The movie will be shot in Sikkim, but is based on real-life events in Darjeeling. He said, “The movie is based on the Gorkhaland agitation. So the story is about the henchmen, the kidnappers and murderers during that time. The film will be called ‘Paatley Baas’, which means thin bamboos. It is actually the name of a village in Darjeeling. Sabse khoonkhar gaon.”
Shenpenn said that he will be acting too in his new movie ‘Paatley Baas‘ and is also going to be seen in a few other Bollywood movies that he is currently working on.
Previously, Shenpenn wrote and directed the feature film ‘Broken Wings’, the shooting for which concluded recently, and is set to be released later this year.
