Aizawl: Mizoram Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati has given the nod to Mizo National Front (MNF)-Congress joint legislature party to form the executive body of the Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC), a party leader said on Tuesday.
MNF leader HC Lalmalsawma Zasai, who was tipped for deputy Chief Executive Member (CEM), said the governor had on Monday approved the formation of the next government in MADC as sought by the joint legislature party.
He said the governor also asked Congress leader H. Malvina, who was tipped for the Chief Executive Member (CEM), to prove his majority by a confidence motion within two weeks.
He said that H. Malvina would be sworn in as the CEM on Wednesday.
Zasai further said the MNF-Congress combine was confident enough to prove its majority in the upcoming floor test.
A sitting would be convened soon after the swearing-in ceremony of the CEM, he said.
Arch-rivals MNF and Congress forged a post-poll alliance on May 16 after days of political stalemate following the council polls results that threw up a hung house on May 9.
While the MNF headquarters endorsed the coalition, the state Congress headquarters opposed it and said it would serve show-cause notices to party leaders in the Mara area and four Congress members, who have been elected to the council recently.
In the council polls held on May 5, the incumbent BJP emerged as the single largest party winning 12 seats, while the MNF bagged 9 and the Congress, which ruled the council for several years in the past, won only 4 seats.
According to the seat and portfolio sharing formula worked out by the MNF and Congress, the CEM, three Executive Members and one nominated seat would go to the Congress, while the MNF would occupy the Deputy CEM, council chairman, 5 Executive Members and two nominated seats.
In an election held by elected members on May 18, MNF member N. Viakhu was elected as the council chairman.
Meanwhile, sources in Congress Bhawan said that the party disciplinary action committee is yet to serve show-cause notices to leaders of the Mara District Congress Committee and four elected Congress members in the MADC.
MADC is one of the three ADCs in the southern part of Mizoram constituted for the Mara people.
The council has 25 elected members and three nominated members.
The council is headed by CEM, who is also the head of the executive committee (similar to the cabinet in the legislative assembly).
There are nine executive members besides the CEM.
