Aizawl: A 30-year-old woman from south Mizoram’s Lunglei town was found dead in a hotel in Aizawl six days after she was reported missing, a senior police officer said on Wednesday.

While a police preliminary enquiry suspects that the deceased died after falling into an elevator shaft from a malfunctioned elevator door of the hotel, her family suspects it was a case of murder. The woman worked as a provisional employee in the state’s power and electricity department.

Mizoram Deputy Inspector General of Police (Headquarters) Lalbiakthanga Khiangte said Vanlalhmangaihzuali had been reported missing from Lushai Hills Residency hotel in Aizawl’s Zarkawt area since April 14, a day before Good Friday.

The woman, who hailed from Lunglei’s Electric Veng, came to Aizawl along with her boyfriend T. Zodinsanga (38) of the same town, on April 13 to sit for a competitive examination and both were lodged in the same hotel, he said.

Following a missing complaint report filed by her boyfriend, a necessary enquiry was launched and search conducted at the hotel during which the woman’s body was found at the base of the elevator shaft in a decomposed state on Tuesday evening, he said.

Thereafter, the forensic team was immediately requisitioned and an inquest was conducted, which revealed that the woman’s neck bone had been fractured badly in the fall.

Khiangte said a preliminary enquiry pointed that the the deceased had fallen into the elevator shaft from a malfunctioned elevator door of the hotel lobby floor which was supposed to be closed when the elevator was not at the same floor.

According to the DIG, the woman’s boyfriend, in his missing complaint on April 15, had stated that he had last seen her on the night of April 13. He also told the police that the hotel CCTV cameras had also captured her climbing over the hotel gate in the early morning of April 14. He said he had searched for her by himself on April 14 and reported the matter to the police the next day.

The preliminary enquiry found that the duo had consumed alcohol on the night of April 13 and the boyfriend had slept around 10 pm while the deceased had reportedly continued drinking further.

Police said upon thoroughly examining available CCTV footage, it had been concluded that she had never left the hotel premises.

DIG Khiangte said the two had come to Aizawl from Lunglei on April 13 to write Combined Graduate Level examination, which was scheduled the next day. He added that the deceased’s boyfriend is now in police custody for further interrogation.

The postmortem examination report of the deceased was yet to be released at the time of filing the report.

Meanwhile, Vanlalhmangaihzuali’s family said they suspect a foul play in the case.

Speaking with EastMojo, they said the deceased was their eldest daughter of four siblings and was in love with Zodinsanga for the past 7 years. Both loved each other very much.

The family claimed that Vanlalhmangaihzuali had proposed marriage to him several times but his family had refused giving “lame excuses”.

The body would be sent to her hometown after a postmortem on Wednesday, police said.
