Mizoram's Information and Public Relations department

Aizawl: Mizoram’s Information and Public Relations department on Monday celebrated 50 years of existence.

Gracing the golden jubilee celebration held at the department’s auditorium in Aizawl, chief minister Zoramthanga congratulated the department on completing 50 years in the service of the people and the state government.

Recalling the rudimentary means of communication that were employed to reach the masses in the early 1970s, he said the department played a pivotal role then and still continues to play a very vital role for the government in the dissemination of information.

Citing that media is a very powerful tool in the present day, Zoramthanga said, “We must exercise caution in using new media, particularly social media and be vigilant towards negating its undesirable effects.”

He further said that the media houses must be unbiased in their reporting and must ensure adequate coverage of news that concerns all sections of society.

Zoramthanga, who was the chief guest of the occasion, also unveiled a plaque and released a souvenir magazine to commemorate the golden jubilee celebration.

State Information and Public Relations minister Pu Lalruatkima, who graced the event as the guest of honour, emphasised on the need for cooperation between government-run media agencies and the press to achieve the vision and the programmes of the government of the day.

He added that the information and public relations department’s role as a feedback channel ensures that the government feels the pulse of the people and this he said is of vital importance.

Information and public relations department director Lallianpuii, who also spoke on the occasion, traced the origins of the department and highlighted the role played by it through 50 years of its journey.
