The Mizoram Table Tennis champion who was imprisoned on suspicion of smuggling drugs has now been declared innocent by the Mumbai High Court.

Lalrinpuia Lalchhuankima, 23, is now free of charges, four years after he found himself in the middle of the controversy after being arrested at the Mumbai airport on his return trip from Mozambique in December 2017.

Lalrinpuia was found in possession of Methaqualone worth Rs 60 lakh. It is reported that the table tennis player was duped into returning home with a bag full of narcotics.

The Narcotics Control Bureau arrested the player on December 13, 2017, from Mumbai and despite efforts of the state government and others to come forward to help him fight the case, Lalrinpuia found himself in prison.

Prior to his arrest, Lalrinpuia was one of the growing stars in the Indian table tennis circuit, having won multiple junior national tournaments. Lalrinpuia had also brought home four international medals for India.
