Aizawl: In a case of gruesome murder, a 13-year-old girl was strangulated to death by her aunt in east Mizoram’s Khawzawl town, about 153 km from state capital Aizawl, a police officer said on Saturday.
Khawzawl Additional Superintendent of Police Lalringliana Pachuau said the heinous incident occurred on Friday when victim Catherine T. Biaksiami (13) was camping at a farm house with accused Chingsianzovi (37) of Khawzawl’s Zuchhip locality near the town.
The accused had asked Catherine to collect firewood during the day. She burst into anger when she saw the number of firewood the girl had collected was not up to her satisfaction, the police said.
The two quarreled and, in a fit of rage, Chingsianzovi choked her niece to death with the help of ‘Hnam” (a traditional strap for carrying load), he said.
He said that the accused was under the influence of alcoholic at the time of the incident.
Catherine was an orphan whose father had died a few years ago and she was living with her aunt Chingsianzovi in Khawzawl town, according to Pachuau.
He said the accused came to Khawzawl police station on Saturday morning and told the police that an unidentified man had attempted to kidnap her niece and that she had apprehended and tied the culprit with a rope.
“When we reached the spot, we discovered that there was no such man as claimed by Chingsianzovi. Instead, we found the girl lying dead,” ASP Pachuau said.
The accused aunt confessed to her crime during questioning, he said.
He said the accused is now detained for further investigation and she will be sent to judicial custody on Sunday.
