Aizawl: In a gruesome murder, a 61-year-old woman was reportedly killed by her husband in what the police are terming as a suicide bomb blast in south Mizoram’s Lunglei district. Her husband also died later at the hospital, police said.

Police said on Tuesday around 12:30 pm Lalthianghlimi, a vegetable vendor, was selling vegetables near the office of High Powered Committee (HPC) in Lunglei’s Chanmari, the police said. Her husband Rohmingliana (62) visited her at her stalls and sat by her side smoking a cigarette.

Police said the two had been separated for about two months over a domestic issue and Lalthianghlimi was living with their eldest daughter.

Rohmingliana reportedly asked his wife to prepare a locally-made cigarette for him. He then reportedly pretended to be unwell and leaned towards his wife when there was a loud explosion.

Police said they suspect the substance used in the blast was gelatin that he had concealed in his clothes.

Lalthianghlimi died on the spot, while her husband Rohmingliana was rushed to Lunglei civil hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries later, police said.

Police said the victim’s eldest daughter, who was selling vegetables next to her mother, was not injured in the blast. Further investigations in the matter are on, police said.
