Aizawl: Mizoram on Saturday registered a COVID-19 infection rate of 3.48 per cent as the 524 fresh cases were detected from 15,020 samples, which is one of the lowest infection rates registered in a single-day in several months, a health department official said.

Official spokesperson on COVID-19 Dr Pachuau Lalmlasawma said that the COVID-19 curve and infection rate per 1,000 samples have shown a downward trend in the past few days.

“We are of the opinion that the COVID-19 curve has begun to show a downward movement. If this trend continues we are hopeful that the high transmission rate can be curtailed in the next few weeks,” he said.

Lalmalsawma, however, said that the single-day positive case and infection rate could increase at any time as community transmission is very high and that sample testing at RT-PCR laboratory in Zoram Medical College (ZMC) is yet to be normalised.

He said that sample test could not be expedited at a RT-PCR laboratory in ZMC for the past few days due to technical issue.

Also, COVID-19 has already entered remote villages, he said.

The state’s COVID-19 count reached 47,995 on Saturday, of which 11,139 are active, according to government data.

As many as 36,679 people have recovered from the infection, including 1,002 on Friday, the data said.

The state also reported three more COVID-19 fatalities in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 177, it said.

Four new cases were confirmed at ZMC’s laboratory, 489 were detected through Rapid Antigen Test from various districts, 28 cases through TrueNat tests and three cases were detected through Fluorescent Immunoassay (FIA) tests.
