Aizawl: As many as 103 jail inmates were among 419 people who tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Mizoram in the last 24 hours, an official said on Wednesday.

The fresh cases detected from 3,974 samples tested in the last 24 hours have pushed the state’s COVID-19 count to 18,398 and the single-day positivity rate to 10.82 per cent, he said.

Besides 103 jail inmates, 16 inmates of Thutak Nunpuitu Team (TNT), an orphanage and rehabilitation centre where 528 COVID-19 cases were detected on Monday, were also among the newly infected people.

The official said that the newly infected 103 people are inmates of Central Jail in Aizawl.

About 70 children, six security personnel and two healthcare workers and central jail staff were also among the newly-infected people, he said.

Of the 419 new cases, Aizawl district reported the highest at 299, followed by Lawngtlai district (52) and Kolasib district (30), he said.

The remaining cases were reported from Siaha, Serchhip, Lunglei, Mamit, Hnahthial and Champhai districts.

Fifty-nine new cases were confirmed at Zoram Medical College’s RT-PCR laboratory, while 13 cases were detected through TrueNat facilities and the remaining 358 cases were detected through Rapid Antigen Test from various districts, the official said.

Four patients have travel history and the rest 415 were found to have locally contracted the infection, he said.

Of the 419 patients, 244 have developed symptoms of COVID-19, he said.

The number of active cases in the state now stands at 4,413, while 13,900 people have recovered from the infection. The death toll in the state is 85.

Mizoram has tested 4,62,344 samples for COVID-19 till date. The recovery rate is 75.55 per cent and death rate is 0.46 per cent.

According to state immunisation officer Dr. Lalzawmi, 4,14,670 people have been administered the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine till Tuesday and of this 53,742 people have received both the doses.
