Aizawl: At least 4 people, including a 3-year-old boy, were killed and two others injured when a massive landslide swept away a building at Thuampui neighbourhood under Bawngkawn police station in the northeastern part of Aizawl, police said on Saturday.

The incident occurred around 9:30 pm on Friday when an Assam-type building housed by a seven-member family was swept away by retaining wall, which collapsed due to a landslip triggered by rain, the police said.

6 of the 7 family members were present at the time of incident, they said.

4 people, all children aged between 3 and 16 years, died on the spot while the family head Lalbiakzuala (75) escaped from the debris and another member was rescued alive during the rescue operation, the police said.

The dead bodies were recovered from the debris during the rescue operation launched by police and local volunteers soon after the incident and the last body of a 16-year-old girl, a twin sister of another 16-year-old girl victim, was recovered around 6 am on Saturday, the police said.

Three occupants of another building, which stood below, have managed to escape when they heard a loud noise of landslide, they said.
