Aizawl: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday released names of the first phase of party candidates for the upcoming Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) polls.
Names of eight candidates were released during the inauguration of the party office in Aizawl.
State BJP president Vanlalhmuaka said his party would contest all the 19 seats in AMC.
Names of 10 more candidates will soon be announced, he said.
Vanlalhmuaka said that the BJP stands for people’s development and relied on the motto “Sab ka Saath sab ka Vikas” (together for everyone’s growth).
“The BJP will work for the development of everyone and the state,” he said.
Hitting out at the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and Congress, the BJP leader said the two parties ruled the state for more than 35 years, but nothing big was achieved during their regimes.
Vanlalhmuaka said that Mizoram needs a party which will impartially work for the people.
The BJP president also inducted 50 new voters into the saffron party during the function on Friday.
Although the AMC polls are yet to be announced, political parties are gearing up for the polls.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Congress had announced names of 19 party candidates, including six women for the municipal polls.
State Congress president Lal Thanhawla had expressed confidence his party will win the polls.
Ruling MNF and main opposition Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) will contest all the seats but haven’t released their candidates yet.
The People’s Conference Party also said it would contest the polls.
In the last municipal polls held in 2015, the MNF had won a majority by bagging 11 seats, while Congress won 7 seats and Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC), which was recently merged with People’s Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram (PRISM) to form People’s Conference Party, bagged 1.
