Mizoram: 37 people killed in road mishaps in 2020
Aizawl: Mizoram reported more road accidents in 2020 compared to 2019, Mizoram police CID (crime branch) inspector Lalrinzauva informed EastMojo.
However, the death toll decreased in 2020 compared to the previous year.
"37 people were killed in 71 road mishaps in 2020, while in 2019, 48 people were killed in 62 road mishaps," Lalrinzuava told EastMojo.
Also, 61 others injured in road mishaps across the state in 2020. Of these, 29 were grievously injured, while 32 were minor injuries.
The highest death toll due to road accidents in 2020 was reported in March as 8 people were killed and 5 others injured in 7 road accidents during that month, he said.
In July, 6 people were killed and 13 others injured, the second-highest accident-related toll in 2020.
According to Lalrinzauva, 13 road mishaps had occurred in July and September, which was the highest single month count in last year.
No road accident was reported in October, he said.
According to a traffic police official, majority of the road accidents were caused due to reckless driving, including drunken driving.
He said that the state government is taking safety measures, including observance of yearly road safety week, to prevent road mishap.
