Mizoram COVID-19 tally crosses 800 mark

Aizawl: The number of COVID-19 cases in Mizoram crossed the 800-mark on Tuesday, with 26 more people including four Border Security Force (BSF) personnel testing positive for the virus, official sources said.

Of the new 26 cases, 17 were confirmed at Zoram Medical College (ZMC), four at Lunglei civil hospital, and five people were diagnosed with the disease by using Rapid Antigen Test, sources said.

It said that 16 cases were reported from Aizawl district, five from Kolasib district, four from Lunglei district and Hnahthial district reported one case. This is the second case to be reported from the newly created district.

The sources further said that four Border Security Force (BSF) Jawans, five truckers, and their helpers, who came from outside, were among the newly infected persons. Additionally, of the 26 patients, nine have contracted the disease from active COVID-19 patients while one patient has no travel history.

The newly infected patients also included two minors, it said. All the new patients were placed under quarantine before they tested positive for COVID-19, sources further added.

So far, Mizoram reported a total of 815 COVID-19 cases, of which 682 are males and the remaining 133 are females. Three people, including an Assam Rifles personnel, have recovered and were discharged from ZMC on Tuesday.

There are 440 active cases in the state while 375 people have already recovered from the virus. Two patients have migrated to Assam. The state has not reported any death due to COVID-19 to date.

Meanwhile, the state government on Tuesday began random sample testing of people having potential exposure to COVID-19 in certain areas of Aizawl, according to health officials.

They said that samples will be collected among high-risk groups such as drivers of commercial vehicles like bus, taxi, two-wheeler taxi, media persons, traffic police, shop keepers and volunteers of local level task forces, among others, and they will be tested with the help of RT-PCR machines to prevent the community spread.
