Former Mizoram speaker Upa Rokamlova dies at 79

Aizawl: Former speaker of Mizoram Assembly Upa Rokamlova breathed his last at a hospital in Aizawl. He was 79 and was suffering from prolonged illness and is now survived by his wife and two children.

The veteran Congress leader was admitted to Ebenezer Medical Centre in Aizawl on May 12 following complaints of kidney disorder, say reports.

Rokamlova joined politics in 1980s after leaving behind his profession as a teacher and was one of the key leaders in the signing of the historic Mizo Peace Accord in 1986.

He won the state assembly elections three times and later went on to become the speaker of Mizoram Assembly in 1990.

Earlier, he had also served as rural development and transport minister during the Congress ruled Lal Thanhawla government.
