Aizawl: Vanramchhuangi alias Ruatfela Nu, a well-known social activist of the state, lodged a complaint with Aizawl police station on Tuesday after a section of media reported that surgical masks were sold at exorbitant rates to the tune of Rs 40 per piece, the police said.

In her FIR, Vanramchhunagi alleged that surgical masks were being sold at Rs 40 by many shops, including Aizawl civil hospital canteen, a pharmacy run by private firm on contract given by the government.

She said that prices of surgical masks were normally available at medical stores at a rate not higher than Rs 10 before the outbreak of coronavirus.

The hike in surgical mask prices in the wake of coronavirus outbreak was against the law, she said.

Meanwhile, a customer told EastMojo that they were prompted to hike the price after the import price shot up following the outbreak of coronavirus.

She said that some were running out of stock and wholesale dealers were rationing surgical mask since Monday.
