Those arrested include 12 Myanmarese nationals, said home minister Lalchamliana while replying to written question by Lalrindika Ralte of opposition Congress
Aizawl: As many as 632 arms and 47,510 rounds of live ammunition have been seized by the state police since 2004, said Mizoram home minister Lalchamliana on Tuesday.
Replying to a written question by Lalrindika Ralte of opposition Congress, Lalchamliana said that at least 32 people, including 12 Myanmar nationals, have been arrested in connection with arms smuggling between the fiscal 2004-2005 and 2019-2020.
Of the 32 arrested, eight people, all belonging to Myanmar, have been convicted while the rest 24 were undertrials, he said.
He said that all the 32 smugglers are currently incarcerated in different jails.
According to the minister, as many as 632 different arms, 47,510 rounds of live ammunition and 314 magazines smuggled into the state mainly from Myanmar, have been seized by the state police between 2004-05 and 2019-20.
The seized arms included 134 AK-47 rifles, 8 AK – 56 rifles and 26 Light Machine Guns, among others, he said.
He said that the largest arm haul was made in 2011-12 fiscal an in that year at least 91 arms were seized in the state, followed by 83 arms seizure during 2014-15 fiscal.
During the current fiscal (2019-2020), at least 23 different smuggled arms were seized against 27 in 2018-2019 fiscal, he further added.
