Mizoram gears up for international paragliding event from Feb 12

The Mizoram Aero-Sports Association (MASA) in collaboration with Sports and Tourism Departments of the State have taken charge of the prominent event

Aizawl: Mizoram is all prepped up to host the International Paragliding Accuracy Championship 2020 from February 12-16 at Serchhip- a town which is four hours’ drive away from the capital Aizawl.

The take off point for this Championship will be held at Bawngchawm (2.5 kms from Serchhip), which is situated at an altitude of 1100 metres.

The Mizoram Aero-Sports Association (MASA) in collaboration with the Sports and Tourism Departments of the State has taken charge of this prestigious event.

The state government has contributed Rs 50 lakh for the event and the North Eastern Council has given a sum of Rs 20 lakh.

Talking to EastMojo, V Larindika, who is finance secretary of MASA said, “We have collaborated with the Tourism department as this is a great chance to promote tourism in the state. Whenever there are paragliding events, tourists are attracted who take joyrides and as a result, many people can earn a living through this."

For this championship, MASA and the state government had organised a Pre- World Cup event in 2018. "Seven countries bid to hold the International Paragliding Accuracy Championship 2020 and I feel that we are really lucky to be selected," Larindika said.

The National Aero-Club of India has set up a 12 members technical team that includes a director from Macedonia, and two judges from Slovenia and Republic of Korea.

Members of MASA have stated that there are plans to set up advanced courses and training school at Serchhip for Mizo youths who are interested to take up paragliding as a career. Tandem pilot course will also soon be set up.

Lalrindika stated that he would like to thank the residents of Serchhip for their unending support to achieve the dream of hosting this International Paragliding Accuracy Championship 2020.

At present, there are eight Mizo pilots who have completed 'Advanced course in paragliding'. So far, 58 Para gliders, including two Mizos have registered for the championship. Two other Mizos will also compete under the Assam Regiment.

There are several World toppers to look out for-

Taesoo Lee from Korea, Igor Vishki from Kazakhstan, Bishal Thapa from Nepal and Lendup Tsheten Sherpa from India. For local rules, regulations and pilot registration log on to ipgac-masa.in
