Contraband valued at Rs 36 lakh in local market smuggled from Myanmar; seized from Aizawl-bound car at Champhai’s Ruantlang locality on Sunday night
Aizawl: At least six people, including a woman, have been arrested in connection with the seizure of 1.5 kg of heroin in Champhai town of Mizoram near the Myanmar border on Sunday.
Officials of the anti-narcotic squad of the excise and narcotics department and volunteers of Champhai’s Zotlang locality intercepted an Aizawl-bound Santro car at Champhai’s Ruantlang locality on Sunday night and recovered 1.5 kg of heroin from the car, said department spokesperson Peter Zohmingthanga.
The seized heroin packets were concealed in the gear box, dash board and back side of the car, he said.
The accused were identified as as Lalrinchhana (32) Jacob Lalhriatpuia (28) Malsawmtluanga (28) and Lalnunthanga (23), all belonged to Champhai’s Zotlang locality, and Hmingthansanga (29) and Lallianpari (44), both from Dartetui village, Zohmingthanga said.
They were booked under relevant section of Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances (ND&PS) Act, 1985. The contraband valued at Rs 36 lakh in the local market was smuggled from Myanmar.
According to the police, it was the biggest heroin seizure in the state. The six accused were produced before a special judge of ND &PS Act and were sent to Champhai district jail on Monday.
In another incident, an Assam-type building housed by a widow was gutted by fire at Khawzawl town on Sunday night. According to police, the incident occurred around 10 pm when the owner Khuangkimi’s son Lalramliana was in deep slumber.
There was no casualty as Lalremliana escaped unhurt and Khuangkimi was at her neighbour’s house at the time of the incident, police said.
Lalramliana was rushed to Khawzawl district hospital due to suffocation and was discharged on Monday, police said. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
