At least 149 people from state, comprising 6 boys & 143 girls, given compensation for being victims of crimes committed under POCSO Act, as per MSLSA reports
Aizawl: At least 235 people in Mizoram, comprising 52 males and 183 females, have been compensated for various crimes under 'Mizoram Victims of Crime Compensation Scheme, 2011’.
As per reports of Mizoram State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA), a total compensation amount of over Rs 5.98 crore was disbursed to crime victims or their kin or dependents under the scheme from 2012 to September 2019.
The record also stated that at least 149 people from Mizoram, comprising six boys and 143 girls, were given compensation for being victims of crimes committed under 'The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act’.
It also said that relatives of nearly 33 murder victims were compensated and at least 28 rape victims were given compensation amounting to Rs 36.40 lakh during the same period.
Notably, the number of crime victims in the state was highest in 2018 as in that year the government disbursed a total amount of crime compensation amounting to Rs 3.32 crore to nearly 103 victims. In 2017, compensation amounting to Rs 1.53 crore was given to 54 victims and Rs 33.84 lakh to 43 victims in 2016.
Interestingly, only one victim was compensated in 2012 when the scheme was implemented while two victims in 2013, nine in 2014 and 12 victims in 2015 were compensated, respectively.
The Mizoram Victims of Crime Compensation Scheme was introduced in 2011 and it got implemented since 2012. The scheme has been amended at least four times in the past years. Under this scheme, minimum compensation ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 3 lakh is given to victims for several crimes, including acid attack, rape and sexual abuse.
