Ensure Mizoram is exempt from Citizenship Bill purview: MPC to MNF

If Assam is protesting legislation, Mizoram -- likely to face socio-economic assimilation due to illegal influx -- should also oppose it, says Mizoram Peoples’ Conference

Aizawl: Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC) president Lalhmangaiha Sailo on Tuesday asked the Mizo National Front (MNF) government to make efforts to ensure that Mizoram is exempted from the purview of the proposed Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB).

Sailo said that various student organisations in neighbouring Assam will launch agitation against the CAB as the Centre was firm on introducing the Bill and pass in the upcoming Parliament session to be held next month.

He said that the citizenship bill, if enacted, will be harmful for Mizoram and the justification that it is not dangerous for the state due to existence of Inner Line Permit (ILP) system is not trustworthy.

“If Assam is protesting against the Bill, Mizoram, which is likely to face socio-economic assimilation due to illegal influx, should also oppose the Bill,” he said.

The MPC leader asked the MNF government to make efforts to ensure that the promise made by union Home Minister Amit Shah before the NGOs to not affect Mizoram by the CAB is materialised. MNF is an ally of the ruling NDA government in the Centre.

Meanwhile, the MPC on Tuesday accused both the MNF and Congress governments of undermining education system in the state.

In a statement, the party alleged both the parties during their rule have recruited teachers according to fabricated recruitment rules as a result of which the education has been badly affected.

The party also blamed the present MNF government headed by chief minister Zoramthanga for allegedly recruiting 91 teachers without floating advertisement.
