Aizawl: The Mizoram Truck Owners’ Association (MTOA) and the Mizoram Truck Drivers’ Association (MTDA) held a joint meeting on Monday where they called on the government to take immediate steps to improve the condition of National Highway 54.

At the joint meeting, the two bodies decided that if the government does not take action to improve the road situation by Wednesday, trucks would stop plying between Kawnpui and Sairang towns from Thursday.

NH-54 is in a dilapidated state. The roads are extremely narrow and since the start of monsoon this year, trucks have been stranded several times. The joint association stated that the highway between Kawnpui and Sairang has deteriorated to the point where it now poses a threat to the lives of the drivers.

NH 54 is the lifeline of Mizoram. All goods are transported through this highway, and passengers travelling to the neighbouring states have to take this route to reach their destinations.

The MTOA and MTDA also stated that the contractor of NH-54 did not respect the defect liability period and no maintenance works have been taken up. They made a clarion call to the state government to take immediate actions to improve the lifeline of the state.

In August this year, the Mizoram Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (MPYCC) too, had slammed the government for the pathetic situation of the NH-54.
