Mizo Zirlai Pawl resolves to make another attempt at building a resting shed in area if measures are not taken to stop the ongoing mosque construction by Assam
Aizawl: Mizoram’s apex and most influential student body -- the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) -- on Tuesday said that it will construct a resting shed if Assam continues constructing a mosque at Zophai near Bairabi town along the Mizoram-Assam border.
MZP president L Ramdinliana Renthlei said that the executive meeting of the students’ body on Tuesday resolved to make yet another attempt to construct resting shed at the area if measures are not taken to stop the ongoing mosque construction by Assam.
The meeting expressed disappointment for the construction of mosque at Zophai at a time the student body could not construct a resting shed there, he said.
He said that the MZP, once again, appealed to the state government to take measure to ensure that the ongoing construction of mosque by Assam is halted.
Renthlei said that the student body avoided any measure to stop the construction as the meeting of core committee on border issue is scheduled to be held on September 6.
The MZP also appealed to the core committee to take speedy action so that the mosque construction is stopped at the earliest, he said.
Tension erupted at Zophai in March last year when MZP functionaries attempted to re-construct the resting, which has been destroyed by Assam police.
More than 60 people, including journalists, were allegedly severely injured when Assam police resorted to lathi charge and gun fire to disperse the protesting students, according to Renthlei.
The border tension was defused when the Centre intervened in the matter.
At a secretary level talk of Assam and Mizoram held in New Delhi in March last year, the Centre had directed both the state governments to maintain status quo on the disputed land.
Meanwhile, the MZP decided to organise Zo unity festival – ZOFEST -- in 2020 to strengthen brotherhood among Mizo tribes.
The student body also made several agendas, including measure to enroll more Mizo educated youths in all India service and central services, revision of quota for differently abled people and enforcement of ILP (Inner Line Permit) in stricter manner, to be put up at the 52nd federal council to be held on September 10.
