Aizawl: The Mizoram government will soon conduct the first general election for the Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) to fulfill the long pending political aspirations of the Hmar people, an official said on Tuesday.

Though the state election commission is yet to announce the election after publication of final roll, the polling for the 12-member council is likely to be held in October, he said.

Chaired by district election officer and Aizawl district deputy commissioner Lalngaihsaka, a meeting of officials and representatives of all political parties and NGOs, including Hmar Inpui, Mizoram region and Hmar Students’ Association (HSA) was held on Tuesday in connection with the upcoming council polls and summary roll revision.

As demanded by SHC election conduct rules, the meeting agreed to use village council rolls published in 2016 as draft or mother roll, the official said.

He said that the government has fixed September 5 for publication of draft electoral rolls and filing of claims and objection can be made to block level officers between September 6 and 12. The final rolls will be published on September 26, he added.

SHC was established on July 9, 2018 as a result of the peace accord signed between the Mizoram government and the erstwhile underground Hmar People’s Convention
(Democratic) on April 2 that year.

There are 31 villages within the jurisdiction of the council in Hmar dominated north-east Mizoram adjoining Manipur.

The council will have 14 members, includes two nominated members. The term of the existing interim council headed by Lalthalmuana Hmar as Chief Executive Member (CEM) will expire on November 8.
