Aizawl/Kamalanagar: Three elected members from Congress in Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) and six former Congress councilors along with their supporters joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday, party sources said.

The three Congress members -- Buddha Lila Chakma, Ajay Kumar Chakma and Onish Moy Chakma -- and six former members -- Dayal Chandra Chakma, Trani Chakma, Purna Muni Chakma, Parimal Chakma, Gyana Shankar Chakma and F Raju Chakma -- were inducted into the BJP by state party president Prof JV Hluna during a function at Kamalanagar, the council headquarters.

The function was attended by many party leaders, including former assembly speaker Hiphei and lone BJP legislator Dr BD Chakma.

The BJP had won five seats in the election to the 20-member CADC held last year. While the Mizo National Front (MNF) won eight seats, the Congress bagged seven.

Meanwhile, a BJP leader told EastMojo that Dr BD Chakma accompanied by three elected and two former Congress members called on BJP national secretary Ram Madhav in Guwahati on August 3 and demanded amendment of sixth scheduled to the constitution of India.

They demanded equal status for three autonomous district councils in the state on par with other ADCs in Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura, he said.

Madhav on his part promised the leaders that the government will review the proposed amendment to the sixth schedule, which could not be passed in the recently concluded session, the leader said.

He also suggested the state BJP leaders to submit additional proposal in or before September.

There are three autonomous district councils in Mizoram constituted in 1972 -- Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC), Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC) and Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC).
