Aizawl: Former Mizoram chief minister and state Congress president Lal Thanhawla on Friday lambasted the Mizo National Front (MNF) government for renaming state's premier medical institution, Mizoram Institute of Medical Education and Research (MIMER).

Addressing a political session at Congress Bhawan in Aizawl, Lal Thanhawla said his government had established MIMER to be the state's premier medical college as well research centre. He said the institution was designed to offer post-graduate course in various disciplines.

He alleged that the MNF government headed by chief minister Zoramthanga has demoted the institution to only under-graduate college. "When the medical college was started as state's referral hospital, the previous MNF government had turned it into a poultry and animal farm," he alleged.

He said medical research centre will be reinstated at the institution when Congress comes back to power. The newly elected MNF government has renamed the institution as Zoram Medical College (ZMC) for undisclosed reasons.

The medical college was inaugurated by Lal Thanhawla on August 7 last year. The institution completed its first year on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Lal Thanhawla appealed party workers to work for the development of the state. He said that politics is a medium to serve the lord and keeping this belief in mind party workers should work to be a blessing for others.

He said that Mizoram has been hit hard by insurgency for about 20 years and claimed that Congress had worked very hard to restore peace in the state.

"After 20 years of insurgency, Mizoram was able to attain peace and under this peace the state has been developing immensely," Lal Thanhawla stated.

The Congress leader also said that people are anxious to bring back Congress to power when they compare the work done by it against the MNF. Lal Thanhawla also on Friday inducted five former students’ leaders and party leaders into Congress.
