Aizawl: Mizoram sports minister Robert Romawia Royte on Friday graced a programme to felicitate the state team for winning the Northeastern States Girls (U-19) Football Tournament.

The event, organised by the 23 Sector Assam Rifles, was held at Loch Hall, 46 Assam Rifles, in Aizawl.

The championship was held in Diphu, Assam and Kohima, Nagaland from July 17-21. The Mizoram team continued its winning spree throughout the event by defeating Nagaland & Assam in the preliminary knockout stages and semi-finals, respectively. The team defeated Sikkim 3-0 in the finals to bag the tournament.

Royte, who presided over the function, lauded the efforts of the team members and the support provided by the Assam Rifles. “Football plays an immense role in connecting the Northeastern states with the rest of the country. The game is an important tool in strengthening national integration and in connecting the region with the rest of the country," he said.

The minister also expressed his appreciation for the cooperation and partnership that existed between the state government and the Mizoram Football Association (MFA). “The state government will support MFA and other sports organisations and associations in every way possible, through financial assistance or otherwise,” he said.

Royte added that the soon-to-be-launched comprehensive sports policy -- Mizoram Sports Policy -- will help to achieve immense recognition in the various disciplines of sports.

The minister also spelt out new initiatives in the pipeline for development of football in the state. Flood lighting and other works of Rajiv Gandhi Stadium to meet international standards will soon be completed, he added.

MFA president Lal Thanzara and other office bearers of MFA were also present on the occasion.
