Aizawl: At least 11 villages in Vanva area in south Mizoram’s Lunglei district have expressed their opposition to be a part of the proposed Hnahthial district, sources said on Tuesday.

The villages are Ramlaitui, Sekhum, Mualthuam North, Haulawng, Mausen, Chengpui, Zotuitlang, Hmuntlang, Bualpui-V, Chhipphir and Ralvawng.

A local leader of Haulawng village said that the villages desire to be part of Lunglei district even if the Hnahthial district is implemented. He said that a meeting of the 11 village councils held at Haulawng recently passed a resolution opposing inclusion of their villages under the proposed new district.

The village leaders also expressed their willingness to be part of Lunglei district, he said.

Apart from village councils, all NGOs and political parties in these villages also opposed the inclusion under Hnahthial district, he added.

The leader also said that the decision opposing inclusion under Hnahthial district was made in view of the geographical locations, communication and people to people contact among the villages of Vanva area.

Before the state assembly polls in November last year, the Mizo National Front (MNF) had promised to funtionalise three districts -- Saitual, Hnahthial and Khawzawl, which it had created during its previous rule in 2008. The succeeding Congress government failed to implement the districts during its 10-year rule between 2008 and 2018.

The ruling MNF has allocated Rs 150 lakh each for the implementation of the three districts. Construction of deputy commissioner’s offices in these new districts are in progress and will be shortly inaugurated, official sources said.

While Hnahthial is currently under Lunglei district, Saitual and Khawzawl are in Aizawl and Champhai districts, respectively.
