Aizawl: Three blocks of a building complex collapsed due to a massive landslide at Durtlang Leitan, located about 5 km from Aizawl city centre, around 6 pm on Tuesday evening.

At least three bodies have been recovered from the site so far, said reports. Eleven injured persons have been rescued and admitted to nearby Synod Hospital in Durtlang. Emergency rescue operations are currently underway. The three deceased have been identified as Lalnunfeli (13), Sainghinglovi (52) and Lalpeksanga (8).

The landslide was triggered by heavy rainfall that has been reported in the region in the past few days, particularly on Tuesday.

As per some reports, protective walls were not erected between the building complex and the slopes of the hills, which resulted in the damages to life and property.

Rescue teams have not been able to work as fast, as remains of the collapsed buildings are still crumbling, said sources.

Meanwhile, power lines have been cut and the area cordoned off for rescue efforts to be conducted in an uninterrupted manner, said reports.

The building was constructed by the National Project Construction Corporation (NPCC) and Royal Infra Construction Ltd under the government's Basic Services for Urban Poor Programme (BSUP).

Construction began in 2009 with a plan to build 20 buildings and a community hall. At least 75% of the construction was completed, said reports.

While the total estimate cost of the complex has been said to be Rs 26.23 crore, about Rs 64 lakh was spent for one building, said reports.
