Aizawl: Three blocks of a building collapsed due to a massive landslide at Durtlang Leitan locality, located about 5 km from Aizawl city centre, around 6 pm on Tuesday evening.
At least three bodies have been recovered from the site so far, said reports. Emergency rescue operations are currently underway. More details are awaited.
The landslide was triggered by heavy rainfall that has been reported in the region for the past few days, particularly on Tuesday.
As per some reports, protective walls were not made between the building and the slopes of the hills, which resulted in the damages caused to the complex.
The building was constructed by the National Project Construction Corporation (NPCC) and Royal Infra Construction Ltd under the government's Basic Services for Urban Poor Programme (BSUP).
As per reports, construction began in 2009 with a plan to build 20 buildings and a community hall. At least 75% of the construction was completed, said reports.
While the total estimate cost of the complex has been said to be Rs 26.23 crore, about Rs 64 lakh was spent for one building, said reports.
