Mizoram court sends 2 men to jail in separate cases

While a Champhai resident was sentenced to 10-yr imprisonment for raping a 14-year-old minor in 2016, an Aizawl man was given 2-yr term for possessing 56 gm heroin last year

Aizawl: A court in east Mizoram’s Champhai district has sentenced two men to undergo rigorous imprisonment in two separate cases of raping a minor and possession of drugs, respectively, in a special hearing on Thursday.

A man identified as Vanlalvena, a resident of Khualen village in Champhai district, was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 5,000 for raping a 14-year-old minor girl on several occasions.

The heinous incident that happened in September 2016 came to light a year later in 2017 after the victim got pregnant.

Upon developing abnormality in her physical appearance, the victim’s parents took her to a doctor before whom the she confessed about her pregnancy and the heinous incident. She further informed that she kept refraining herself from revealing the crime as she was threatened by the rapist.

Earlier, an FIR has been filed against the accused in November, 2017 by the chairman of Child Welfare Committee in the district after the victim’s parents approached them.

The court gave the verdict after several hearings when the accused confessed about his crime before the police and court.

In another verdict, the special court convicted Lalnunzira, a resident of Falkawn village in Aizawl district, and sentenced him to 2 years’ rigorous imprisonment for possessing heroin.

Lalnunzira was held with 56 grams of heroin by officials of excise and narcotics department in 2018 near Mualkawi area of Champhai district. Besides rigorous imprisonment, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on Lalnunzira.

Meanwhile, police officials informed that he was sent to the Champai district jail after the verdict.
