Hmar body opposes Sinlung Hills as part of new Mizoram districts

Aizawl: Hmar Students’ Association (HSA), the lone students’ body as well as the oldest organisation among the Hmar people in Northeast, on Friday expressed its strong opposition to a bid to include the Hmar-dominated villages in the northeastern part of Mizoram under the proposed Saitual and Darlawn districts.

A statement issued by HSA’s Sinlung Hills Joint headquarters said it vehemently opposed the move to merge several villages within the jurisdiction of Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) under the proposed Saitual and Darlawn districts, though it endorsed their creation.

“We highly respect the sentiments of Saitual and Darlawn people. But the people of SHC area, who choose to remain in Aizawl district, should not be forced to merged with the proposed new districts,” the statement said.

There are more than 31 villages under SHC in three assembly constituencies- Serlui, Tuivawl and Chalfilh in Aizawl and Kolasib districts. Majority of the Hmar villages are in present Aizawl district.

SHC was created as a result of the peace accord between the Mizoram government and the erstwhile underground Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic) on April 2 last year.

HSA Singlung Hills Joint headquarters president VL Khawbung told EastMojo  that they have consulted leaders of the villages, who opposed the move and chose to be remained in Aizawl district.

He said that though Mizoram is the most peaceful state in the country, the people of SHC live in panic and unrest due to insurgency.

“We appeal to the people of Saitual and Darlawn to respect our sentiments. We also ask the state government to pay attention to our demand,” he said.

The student body said if the state government forced the villages to be part of the proposed district against their interest, they would oppose it till the end.

In the final stage of its rule in 2008, the MNF government declared the creation of three administrative districts-Saitual, Khawzawl and Hnathial, which remained non-functional after the Congress came to power between 2008 and 2018.

Fulfilling its poll promises, the new MNF government headed by Chief Minister Zoramthanga made budgetary provision for the implementation of three districts.

Several villages in the Hmar dominated villages are being planned to include under the proposed Saitual district.

The people of Darlawn in Aizawl district have also revived its three decade old demand for the creation of Darlawn district comprising the entire SHC area.
