Aizawl: Mizoram food civil supplies and consumer affairs minister K Lalrinliana on Friday said the state government is making massive efforts to make Mizoram self-dependent in food grains.

Citing about the importance of economic self-sufficiency, the minister said the government is making massive efforts to make the state become self-dependent in rice. “We need good laws to make our state economically developed. The government is taking effort in this regard,” Lalrinliana said while addressing a meeting at the MNF office in Aizawl.

Lalrinliana said that the state government currently distributes 1.1 lakh quintals of rice to households through the public distribution system, which are imported from neighbouring states. “Mizoram will be in a state of complete dismay if the Centre stops doling aids and neighbouring states ban selling rice bags to the state,” he said.

Citing that the state government is making massive effort to harvest paddy, at least twice in a year, the minister asked farmers to cooperate with the government.

Lalrinliana said that the government is also making effort to ensure that the state has sufficient supply of cooking gas. “Efforts are on to establish gas plants at several places,” he said.

The minister added that the government is committed to fulfill its manifestos to usher in development in the state.
