465 cases tried under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 from 2014 to April this year, say Aizawl district court officials
Aizawl: At least 114 people were convicted by a special court in Aizawl for sexually molesting and raping minors during the last five years.
According to officials of the Aizawl district court, a total of 465 cases related to child molestation and rape under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 were tried from 2014 to April this year. Majority of the cases were successfully disposed of.
At least 26 child molestation and rape cases were tried in 2014, 107 in 2015, 100 in 2016, 109 in 2019, 88 in 2018 and 35 cases were registered during the current year till April, officials said.
The POCSO Act was enacted to provide a robust legal framework for the protection of children from offences of sexual assault, sexual harassment and pornography, while safeguarding the interest of the child at every stage of the judicial process. The framing of the Act seeks to put children first by making it easy to use by including mechanisms for child-friendly reporting, recording of evidence, investigation and speedy trial of offences through designated special courts.
