Aizawl: Boarders at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) based in Aizawl, Mizoram on Tuesday complained of poor lodging facilities and abysmal food provision at their hostel leading to malnutrition. They urged both, the centre and state to look into their plights and resolve the issues at the earliest.

Student leader KC Lalramluha, addressing a press conference in Aizawl, said that the hostel provided poor facilities to the boarders owing to which they have faced many difficulties. He alleged that the hostel did not provide sufficient water, which forced them to skip their training classes on many occasions as they have to take bath every time they do physical exercise.

Charging the SAI complex of giving poor diet to the residents, he said that they were provided stale food on several occasions. “While we are supposed to get fruits every day, the hostel authority provided [it to] us only on Sunday. On several occasions, the hostel provided us poor quality of meats and rice,” he alleged.

He said that they have appealed to the hostel in-charge Manmohan Singh and had also written to SAI Northeast Centre in Imphal several times but to no avail.

Lalramluha said that they have been dealing with poor facilities since last year. He added that students have to walk a 2-km road which passes through a forest to reach their gym centre and many girls faced inconvenience as they have to return late in the evening.

Further, he alleged that they have been without coaches for taekwondo and wrestling disciplines since 2016 and have not received sports materials for various disciplines for quite a long time.

Located at Mission Veng in Aizawl, there are altogether 67 boarders from seven different sports disciplines at the centre run by SAI. The centre is manned by an in-charge, two wardens and two coaches.
