Aizawl: Former Mizoram chief minister and state Congress president Lal Thanhawla on Friday slammed the Mizo National Front (MNF)-led state government for renaming the state’s first medical college -- Mizoram Institute of Medical Education and Research (MIMER).

“It is disgusting that the MNF government headed by chief minister Zoramthanga has renamed the medical college, which never is its own product,” the Congress top brass said while addressing a political session at Congress Bhawan in Aizawl on Friday.

He claimed that the medical college was established by his government with great efforts. He also said that the MNF government has insulted the people of Mizoram by renaming the medical college.

Lal Thanhawla accused the MNF of destroying the state for 20 years during insurgency.

“The MNF has brought home nothing big. Though we insisted them to at least resolve the state boundaries with Assam, they ignored as they fear their home coming may get delay,” he said.

He said that the MNF during its previous rule between 1998 and 2008 had established no permanent assets.

Lal Thanhawla claimed that all they key assets like extension of railway line up to Sairang, border trade centre at Kawrpuichhuah on the Indo-Bangladesh border and the other in Champhai district on the Mizoram-Maynmar border and Tuirial Hydro Electric projects, among others were built during Congress government.

The state cabinet had renamed MIMER as Zoram Medical College in its meeting held on April 22.

The Congress alleged that the medical institution was renamed after Chief Minister Zoramthanga, which contravened the cabinet decision that no monument should be named after a person who is alive.

The MNF, however, refuted the allegation saying there was no link between Zoramthanga’s name and the new name of the medical institution.

MIMER was inaugurated by Lal Thanhawla on August 7, 2018. It is located at Falkawn, about 16 km from Aizawl.
