Mizoram: Cabinet renames MIMER as Zoram Medical College

The state’s first medical college was established at Falkawn, about 16 km from Aizawl, by former chief minister Lal Thanhawla on August 7 last year

Aizawl: The Mizoram cabinet has renamed Mizoram Institute of Medical Education & Research (MIMER) as Zoram Medical College.

MIMER, the state’s first medical college, was established at the state referral hospital at Falkawn, about 16 km from Aizawl. It was inaugurated by former chief minister Lal Thanhawla on August 7 last year.

The medical college began classes with intake of 100 students for three courses -- anatomy, physiology and biochemistry from August 8 last year.

An official statement on Tuesday said the cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Zoramthanga on Monday has decided to recruit 946 teachers for primary and middle schools to solve the perennial problem of faculty shortage across the state.

State education minister Lalchhadama had earlier informed the state assembly that as many as 2,300 posts are lying vacant for recruitment of teachers and the government has been taking massive effort for rationalization of teachers across the state.

Reports said that various schools in Mizoram rural villages faced shortage of teachers due to unequal distribution of teachers.

State’s apex student body the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) alleged that majority of teachers desired to be posted in urban areas and reluctant to go to rural area.

The cabinet agreed to hand over Govt. Boys Middle School and Govt. Boys Model English Medium Primary School to Mizoram Presbyterian Church of India, the largest denomination in the state, the official statement also said said.

It has also approved the proposal for recruitment of 32 staffs for Mizoram State Institute of Hotel Management as part of initiative to have the institution operational immediately.

The cabinet also decided to organise state games for promotion of games and sports in Mizoram. The event will be organize and overseen by sports and youth service department. Rs 150 has been allocated for the purpose.

The cabinet resolved to establish two directorates under social welfare department namely Directorate of Social Welfare and Tribal Affairs and Directorate of Women and Child Development.

It further approved the proposal for implementation of 7th pay for chairman and members of Mizoram Public Service Commission, State Election Commissioner and Mizoram Board of School Education Chairman.
