Aizawl: The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) on Tuesday launched campaign for the Lok Sabha polls and assembly by-election to Aizawl West-I seat which will be held simultaneously on April 11.

The party has fielded former Doordarshan director general C. Lalrosanga for the lone Lok Sabha seat and former student leader Zothantluanga for assembly by-election.

Addressing a campaign kickoff at Vanapa hall here, Chief Minister and MNF chief Zoramthanga said the upcoming polls will be a straight fight between his party and the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM)-Congress combine, who fielded a football icon and journalist Lalnghinglova Hmar, who is a prominent figure in Mizoram.

Zoramthanga said that although there are some independent candidates contesting the polls, the main formidable opponent of the MNF is the ZPM-Congress combine.

He expressed confidence that his party would win both the polls as usually oppositions used to lose to the ruling party in Lok Sabha polls and by-election. “We are going to cast our votes during broad day light (which he means voters are well conscious of whom to vote and whom not). People have already made up their mind to whom they will vote for,” he said.

He asked the people to join with the ruling side. Citing that the MNF government has done commendable jobs in developing the state in just 100 days of its rule, the oppositions have no point of attacking the MNF but tried to propagandise the party links with NEDA.

The former rebel leader said the MNF along with Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) and Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC) which are members of ZPM had signed agreement expressing their allegiance to the NDA before Lok Sabha polls in 2014.

He alleged that ZNP has forged alliance with BJP for Aizawl North-III seat in the 2013 assembly elections.

Hitting out at ZPM, Zoramthanga also said it is joining hands with Congress, who sold alcohol against the interest of churches and the people. Commenting on the BJP president Prof. JV Hluna’s remarks that his party would extend support to the MNF in the by-election, the MNF president said they strongly welcome any party, who want to support the regional party. He said that the MNF did forge alliance with any party in the state including BJP in the run-up to Lok Sabha polls.
