Aizawl: Mizoram unit of National People’s Party (NPP) on Tuesday said it would extend support to the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The decision was made at the meeting of the party leaders held under the leadership of its state president Hmingdailova Khiangte, a statement issued by NPP said.

The meeting took serious note of the appeal made by NPP president Conrad K. Sangma and resolved to support the MNF nominee C. Lalrosanga in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, the statement added.

The meeting also discussed about strengthening the party in Mizoam. Both NPP and MNF are part of the BJP led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA). The northeast centric party will not contest both the Lok Sabha polls and assembly by-election in Mizoram.

Election to the lone Lok Sabha seat in Mizoram will be held simultaneously with by-election to Aizawl West-I seat on April 11. Counting of votes will be held along with rest of the country on May 23.

NPP Mizoram unit was formed in September 2018. The party has contested the assembly elections held on November 28 last year from nine constituencies and secured a total of 3,507 votes against Zoramthar group, which secured 3,194 votes, People’s Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram’s 1,262 votes and Nationalist Congress Party’s 503 vote.

It emerged as the best performing party among the minor and newly floated political parties in the state.
