Shillong: Panic struck Shillong’s Iewduh market on Tuesday after locals witnessed smoke emanating from an unattended bag on Tuesday afternoon.

According to locals, the shopkeepers panicked after they noticed smoke coming out of an abandoned bag. According to Bala, a shopkeeper, as soon as she saw smoke coming out of the bag, she immediately asked the nearby shopkeepers to vacate. “Fearing for our lives, we immediately ran from the spot. It was in no time that the police were there and cordoned off the area,” said Bala.

After inspection, it was revealed that it was a case of leaking nitrogen gas. Rumours spread around the area that it was a bomb, which left most of the people around worried.

Pompee, another shopkeeper, said considering what happened at the Laitumkhrah market a couple of months ago, hence, people were afraid that it could have been a similar incident. “Everyone thought it was a bomb but if it was, it would have exploded,” said Pompee.

According to an official who wanted to remain anonymous said that the bag consisting of nitrogen gas was actually kept at one of the shops since the person had to carry out an errand.

So far there has been no official report from the end of the police or neither the traditional head (Syiem Hima Mylliem).

In the past months, Shillong has witnessed one IED blast at Laitumkhrah market while recently, a bomb was placed in front of the NPPs office at the Lachumiere locality.
