Shillong: The Opposition Congress is in a very weak position because of the situation not just at the national level but also within the party at the state level, said Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) National President Conrad K Sangma on Thursday.
Keeping this in mind, Sangma said the NPP was confident about the upcoming by-polls to the three constituencies of Mawphlang, Mawryngkneng and Rajabala.
He, however, clarified that the NPP was not overconfident.
Sangma, who has contested 5 elections till date, said he has realised that when you underestimate your opponent that is when you are on the wrong foot. “I have always believed and I always guide and tell my candidates to never underestimate the Opposition and never be over confident,” said Sangma.
The party has already announced names of its candidates from the three assembly constituencies.
“The people of all the three constituencies have seen the work that we have done and they want to be with us. They have seen how the NPP has been working not just in the state but throughout the northeast,” added Sangma.
Asked about its coalition partner United Democratic Party (UDP) deciding to extend support to the NPP candidate at Mawryngkneng constituency, and that NPP could have done the same at Mawphlang, Sangma said as a government and coalition partners they will respect each other and will always work to support each other, wherever possible.
