Shillong: Following the death of a pregnant nurse at the Ganesh Das Hospital in Shillong, Congress MLA PT Sawkmie on Tuesday demanded that the government make public the report received from the hospital.
Sawkmie said it was unfortunate that the state lost a health worker who was in such a vulnerable stage to Covid-19.
“I would demand the government to place the report in the public domain. Whatever report that has been submitted by Ganesh Das Hospital should be made public,” said Sawkmie.
He added even if health workers and Asha workers are treated as frontline workers, we must ensure that their lives are also protected.
Sawkmie added, “The health department has failed in one way. Such an unfortunate incident had occurred where a pregnant nurse died due to Covid.”
He felt that if the government placed the report in the public domain, it would clear any doubts that the public has.
On May 30, Manisha Turnia, who was six and a half months pregnant, succumbed to the virus. Though the Director of Health Services, Dr Aman Warr clarified that Turnia was not working in the Covid ward, citizens were furious with the authorities for allowing a health worker who was pregnant to work during such a situation.
A social organisation known as Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) Central Body, on Monday, had written to the health minister AL Hek. They demanded an immediate and thorough enquiry into the details of the events that led to her death.
