Shillong: Following the death of six miners near Dienshalu village in East Jaintia Hills District, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma informed that the police have picked up 17 people for interrogation.
“There are laws put in place for anybody who does illegal mining, and the Mine and Minerals Development and Regulation Act (MMDR) Act is strong, and there is a five-year imprisonment in this,” said Sangma.
He added that the government would take stringent actions against anybody involved in illegal coal mining.
Sangma added that he was not aware of reports that the mine owner was a brother of one of the Cabinet ministers.
On January 21, six workers in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district were killed in a crane accident while working at an abandoned coal mine site.
