Meghalaya AICC secretary in-charge says no demand for new president

Chatrath said his visit to Meghalaya was for general discussions, and about strengthening the party's organisational machinery

Shillong: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary in-charge Meghalaya, Manish Chatrath on Monday, refuted claims about the demand for a new president in the state unit. He said that his visit to the state was being done after taking over as AICC-in-charge of Meghalaya.

Interacting with media persons, Chatrath said the meeting was a general discussion, and about strengthening the party's organisational machinery since it was his first meeting after taking over as AICC in-charge of Meghalaya. “There was no discussion of appointing a new MPCC president," Chatrath informed. He further added that the incumbent MPCC president, Dr Celestine Lyngdoh did not discuss wanting to be relieved from the post of party president with him.

Contrary to Chatrath's statement, Congress leader Dr Mukul Sangma informed that he (Celestine) had expressed a desire to get the approval of the Congress President to be relieved from his responsibility.

"He (Dr Celestine) has been speaking to us for quite some time since November and December last year. We are all required to shoulder our responsibility as long as possible. We are looking at how collectively we decide to see if he has to be relieved and how best we can do that," Sangma said.

MPCC president, Dr Celestine Lyngdoh claimed that there are no conditions that the president's post should be for two, three or four years and wouldn’t say that his term has come to an end.

"In the past, I have been busy attending to my family since my mother was unwell. It is for this reason I was not free for the party activities. It depends on the AICC if I should continue as the president or to replace me," Lyngdoh said.
