NESO observes 'black day' in Meghalaya, puts up banners opposing CAA
Shillong: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) observed December 11 as a ‘Black Day’ in Shillong to mark the first anniversary of the passing of the Citizenship Amendment Act.
NESO is a conglomeration of several student bodies, including the Khasi Students’ Union and Garo Students’ Union from Meghalaya.
KSU members gathered at Motphran and hung black banners which read- 'December 11, 2019 the day CAA became an Act, a black day for the indigenous NE communities.' Another banner read 'Lurshai Hynniewta was killed because of CAA, a sign of darker days ahead. NESO will never accept CAA.'
KSU President Lambokstar Marngar said that the Central Government has not respected the voice of the people of the Northeast. Despite all agitations from the people of the Northeast, the Central Government went ahead and passed the Bill, he said.
"The indigenous community of NE need a mechanism to check and control the influx of migrants. So, as a sign of protests, black flags were hung and banners were also put up in different parts of the state," informed Marngar.
